My father was a soldier in World War II like most of the fathers in the neighborhood where we grew up. As a child I saw war as exciting and heroic. Now that I am old enough to be a parent myself I realize how difficult it must have been and how being a soldier shaped my father's life.

What you are about to read are recollections my father has shared with his children. He recalls the impressions and feelings of an eighteen-year-old soldier with honesty, clarity, and humor that temper the difficulties and losses.
